1. Water. You probably already know that dogs need fresh, clean water at all times. All of us do. But if you want to remove as many toxins as possible from your dogs water and do everything possible to keep him healthy, think about using a water filter. Tap water can contain many unhealthy chemicals such as lead and low levels of prescription medications. A water filter or purifier can help remove as many toxins from the water as possible and make the water healthier for you and your dog.
2. Food. There are an amazing number of dog foods on the market today. Unfortunately, many of them are not made from very healthy ingredients. They may technically pass government standards but they can contain ingredients that you wouldn't want your dog to eat. You can choose healthier food for your dog by doing some research and learning to read dog food labels. Look for foods that contain more meats than fillers. Most of the better foods contain much less corn and other cereal products. Its not necessary to go completely grain-free but you should look for foods that have named meat sources, such as lamb, lamb meal, chicken, chicken meal, and so on.

4. Exercise. Its very important that your dog gets the proper exercise. As much as 40 percent of the dogs in the United States are considered to be overweight or obese. What's Happening at Ultimutt This Week... Great news! We have our A/C unit installed and the dogs are enjoying a comfortable 75 degrees in the 4,000 sq ft warehouse! They love to go outside to play ball and swim and then come back inside to get cooled off. The boarders have enjoyed being cooler at night as well!

Contrary to what most people believe, dogs overheat more quickly than humans do. They wear their fur coat all year long and they do not sweat. They cool their bodies by panting, or blowing out heat, which is much less effective than sweating. Even if you are comfortable, your dog may be too hot!
What happens in heat stroke?
Heat stroke happens when heat gain exceeds the body's ability to dissipate heat. High temperatures cause chemical reactions that break down body cells which lead to dehydration and blood thickening. This puts extreme strain on the heart blood clotting and subsequent death to tissue. Liver, brain and intestinal cells are usually the first to be affected and this can occur quickly. Normal body temperature for a dog is about 101 F to 102 F. If his temperature reaches 106 F, he is in danger of brain damage, vital organ failure and death. Reducing body temp quickly is imperative. A dog who recovers can still have organ damage and lifelong health problems. Temperatures above 106 F are extremely dangerous.

Rapid, frantic panting
Wide eyes
Thick saliva
Bright red tongue
Vomiting

What's Happening at Ultimutt This Week... What a week! We've been very busy with Memorial weekend coming up! We have a lot of boarders this weekend. Remember, we are open Saturday and Sunday from 4 - 5 pm for boarding drop-offs and pick-ups and closed on Monday. We resume daycare on Tuesday at 7am.Ultimutt is helping with the Alzheimer's Memory Dog Walk on June 5th at 9 am. Register for this great cause and get some exercise for yourself and your dog! If you are interested in participating, please let me know so we can plan to have enough doggie goodie bags to hand out. Buy your dog a life jacket - not all dogs are natural swimmers and older and young puppies can tire quickly, the weight of a water logged thick and/or long coat can easily drag your dog under water, your dog can be knocked over by breaking waves, if your dog jumps into the river he may not be able to get again if the bank is too slippery.Like people, dogs can quickly get into trouble and if you are not there to help, may easily drown. By using a doggy life jacket when your dog's around water you are buying him extra time should he get into trouble and need rescuing - it just makes sense.2. Watch what your dog drinks - water in lakes, stagnant ponds and slow moving rivers can contain algae and parasites which, if ingested by your dog, can cause vomiting, diarrhea and in some instances death.Swimming pool water contains chlorine and other chemicals which can make your dog sick if he drinks the water.Always keep plenty of fresh water with you, and teach your dog to drink out of a water bottle so you don't need to carry a bowl with you all the time!3. What's Happening at Ultimutt This Week... The heat is on! The dogs love to swim in the swimming pool and get cool on these warm May days! We have air conditioning in the warehouse so when the dogs get hot, they can come in to cool down. We have to spoil our dogs, don't we? They love the Astroturf out back as they like to sunbathe and stretch out. We've had several new Ultimutts this past week and they have fit right in and had a ball.We're growing and we'd like to introduce you guys to our staff. Kristal Grounds has been here several months. She is a vet assistant so its nice to have someone on staff that can help with the dogs. Christine Curran is a student at UA Fort Smith. She plays tennis for UAFS and loves bringing her dogs Zoey and Ellie to daycare. Kelsey Kelton is helping us for the summer. She's a student at UA Fayetteville. We're so excited to have these girls helping us. We wanted to share their names and faces so we aren't strangers to you when you visit Ultimutt.

Is your dog pretty darn close to being the very center of your universe? Do you love spoiling him, responds to his every whimper and cry, and spend hundreds of dollars on gourmet treats? To say that dogs are man's best friend is anything but a cliché You might be the most miserable person in the world without a friend to your name... but your dog will treat you like royalty every time you walk through the door. So how do you repay that unconditional love and devotion? There are hundreds of different ways!1. Spoil him rotten.A lot of people spend a lot of money at chic pet boutiques, dressing their dogs in hundred-dollar sweaters and paying for meticulous pedicures. They buy diamond-studded collars and give their dogs rooms all to themselves. You probably don't have the budget for things like that, right? You can still spoil your dog with simple, everyday things that cost you the absolute minimum. Next time your pooch needs a bath; focus on giving him a massage while you're working the shampoo into his coat. Take him out for a drive once each week. Or you can2. That is a double plus.You know that food needs to be both delicious and nutritious to make sure he has as long and happy a life as possible. Prepare for the worst.If you know exactly what to do in a tough situation or an emergency, you infinitely increase the chances that your dog will be around for a long time to come. Do you know what to do when he's choking? You should lay your dog on his side and place one hand on his back and the other on his stomach just behind his rib cage. Using the stomach hand, push in and toward the throat twice, but without too much force. If you can see a foreign object, sweep your fingers through his mouth to remove it. If he's still choking, place your mouth over his nose and exhale until his chest rises. Repeat once, and then thrust two more times. Continue until he coughs out the obstruction. Now consider what would happen if he started to choke and you had no clue what to do, then ended up spending 10 minutes calling vets and driving him there. Making sure you're prepared to care for his health and wellbeing is a great way to show him how much you love him.4. Speak his language.Unless you believe in pet psychics, there's really no way for you to read your pooch's mind and figure out exactly what she's thinking. The good news is that, like many dog owners, the problems you're having can probably be traced to one simple thing: you're trying to communicate with your dog from a human standpoint, and your dog isn't a human. Rather than saying no, a word that doesn't really mean anything to a dog, try growling in a deep, throaty voice the next time you're unhappy with something he's done. Join the Sebastian County Humane Society in a 5K run on May 22,2010, 9:00am. The cost is $25. All proceeds go to the SCHS. We put out tick crystals in our backyard monthly to ensure a tick/flea free zone. We sanitize our facility nightly to ensure a safe environment for your pet.Although we require your dog to be vaccinated once a year, we highly recommend that you vaccinate your dog twice a year for Bordetella (kennel cough). This is a highly contagious sickness that can get passed easily through dogs. We still have cow bones for sale. They are $3 and $5 each. Prepare for the worst.If you know exactly what to do in a tough situation or an emergency, you infinitely increase the chances that your dog will be around for a long time to come. Do you know what to do when he's choking? You should lay your dog on his side and place one hand on his back and the other on his stomach just behind his rib cage. Using the stomach hand, push in and toward the throat twice, but without too much force. If you can see a foreign object, sweep your fingers through his mouth to remove it. If he's still choking, place your mouth over his nose and exhale until his chest rises. Repeat once, and then thrust two more times. Continue until he coughs out the obstruction. Now consider what would happen if he started to choke and you had no clue what to do, then ended up spending 10 minutes calling vets and driving him there. March Madness
I know I promised to write more and it hasn't happened... I have been busy playing with and loving on all of our babies: young, old, veterans and rookies!
The dogs loved the snows of Jan and Feb and have been in Doggie Heaven over the last week or so. The sunshine, warm weather, and countless hours outside have been wonderful for all of us. Our new white Boxer, Rommel, Maggie, my rotten child, and myself have had to stay lathered up in sunscreen over the past few days-what a wonderful problem to have.
Brook and I are prepping for summer. We have ordered tents, additional fans and air conditioners, and tank tops so we can maybe stay cool.
Friday we hired a new part time worker to assist us. She has her Vet Assistance degree and 3 babies of her own. We interviewed her but the true test was bringing her out with the Ultimutts to see how they reacted. They loved her instantly and after about 20 minutes of watching her interact with the dogs we knew she would be a fit. So if you see Kristal up here welcome her to the pack.

Laughing Matter If you have a feeling your dog is smiling at you, it could be that he or she is ready for some fun.
According to a recent study of dogs at play, researchers observed a distinctive rapid panting behavior that appeared to be the equivalent of laughter in dog language. The pant was used to communicate pleasure and evoked playfulness in other dogs. The next time you play a lively game of fetch with your pup, listen closely. The panting you hear may actually be a hearty laugh.

It has been another fun week at Ultimutt! We started the week with our third in this series of training class. This class is made up of everyone's Christmas puppies, so it is both fun and challenging! But, their owners are very proud that they are learning the basic commands.
This week also kicked off our Cutest Dog Photo Contest and we've already received several entries. Check out our website to see all these cute dogs. The judges are going to have a rough time choosing! To enter your dog's photo, email Brook at Brook.Lang@ultimuttdogcare.com. The winner will receive a free spa day at Ultimutt including a day of doggie daycare (if fixed and up-to-date on shots), bath, nails, and bandanna or hair bow of choice. The owner will win an Ultimutt overnight tote bag for their dog.
Maggie and Rudy have made friends and have enjoyed playing together. Mary's mother's dog, Girlfriend, visited and made fast friends with Junior. With this weather and the weather to come we have made sure our Ultimutt's are tired when they go home! We have thrown the tennis balls for hours and they have really enjoyed chasing it.
We have a fantastic puppy who is about 15 weeks old and will probably end up weighing about 40 pounds. This puppy has had a traumatic start in her life, and is looking for a loving home. She is a good puppy and has lots of love to give. However, she will do best in a home that will allow her to be an "inside dog." She gets along great the other dogs so "brothers" and "sisters" already in the home would be a bonus.
